Picking up the camper pushes departure to ~10 AM. That is fine. Monday is a driving day. Palo Duro Canyon is optional if you are running behind. The real scenery starts Tuesday.

The second largest canyon in the United States -- 120 miles long, up to 20 miles wide, and over 800 feet deep. Often called the Grand Canyon of Texas.

Game Plan

Quick stop at the visitor center overlook if time allows -- 20-30 minutes. No need to drive down into the canyon. The rim views are stunning and you have miles ahead. If you are arriving after 5 PM, skip it and head straight to Silver Wind.

  • State park entry fee: $8/person
  • The canyon walls glow red and orange at golden hour
  • There are restrooms and water at the visitor center
