Desert View Watchtower

A 70-foot stone watchtower designed by architect Mary Colter in 1932, inspired by ancestral Puebloan towers. It's the first major viewpoint when entering from the east -- and it might be the best.

What You'll See

  • Panoramic views of the canyon, Colorado River, and Painted Desert
  • Hand-painted murals inside by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie
  • Gift shop and bookstore on the ground floor

South Rim Afternoon

After Desert View, drive the 25-mile scenic road west along the rim. Key overlooks:

  • Lipan Point -- wide river views
  • Grandview Point -- one of the highest overlooks
  • Mather Point -- the classic Grand Canyon vista
  • Park at the visitor center and walk the Rim Trail between viewpoints
